4th of July 2014 Fireworks in Tahoe

Lake Tahoe drew over 100,000 spectators to our 4th of July celebrations around the lake, but thanks to my photography buddy +John Cocores I was able to photograph and film the display from a private beach in the exclusive Tahoe Meadows development as an invited guest.

+Tahoe South's Fireworks display "Lights on the Lake" is famously synchronized to music, usually stuff I couldn't possibly licence.  This year they decided to feature local artist +Jesse Kalin so I actually got to use a piece of music that was really featured in the show.  (I don't know if this is where it was, I didn't have a radio with me when I was filming; but this is where I imagine I would put it if I was designing the fireworks display.) You can buy all of Jesse's music at his website

America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride 2014

See my Gallery of America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride on Google+
Every year since I've had a channel I have been covering Bike The West's signature bicycling event America's Most Beautiful Bike ride; though, over the years I've varied dramatically on how I have chosen to cover it.  By tradition, I always cover the bicycle race on foot to give me a different perspective to the people who cover it on bicycle helmet cams or in a car.  Some years, like my 2013 video, I have done intensive planning to get every last detail of the race according to a plan; while in other years I have gone out with no plan at all with the goal of "seeing what I could find" like I did with random vlogging these events in 2012.    This year I tried to go for a mix of spontenaity and thoroughness to try to capture the best of both worlds.

This year, my only preparation was looking up the times of the race starts and the wagon train - Like in 2012 I deliberately made no plan of what I was going to do after capturing the race start at the Montbleu Resort at 6-8am; so I arrived just as the first heat was gearing up to leave the starting line from the Montbleu Resort and spent the first few starts trying to capture the enormous scale of 3,200 bicyclists all trying to start a race at the same time, before getting a few starting line interviews.

Following my usual custom of going west to capture the bicycles going through South Lake Tahoe I worked my way down Highway 50 from the state line to the traffic sign just before Wildwood Ave.  more or less repeating the middle opening of every previous year's video.  By tradition, I would usually have kept filming as I walked west towards Lakeview Commons and El Dorado Beach, and spent most of the late morning waiting there for the wagon train.

But then I thought to myself: "Wait, wasn't the point of going out with no plan having the freedom to change ideas?  What if I turned around 180 degrees and went East instead?"  The advantages were immediately obvious to my mind: instead of coping with not being able to keep up with an ever-thinning stream of stragglers, I would instead focus on filming my way east along US 50 and hopefully catch the wagon train much earlier in the day against a much prettier natural setting.

So, I put my tripod in my backpack and hoofed it back through Stateline as quick as I could, estimating that, though I was unlikely to see many cyclists on the east side of town at that phase of the race I estimated if I hurried I could catch the wagon train as it passed the natural surroundings of Khale Park.  At the park, I found an advance man for the Wagon Train waiting, who kindly informed me that the train would be a full hour's wait yet at that spot, so I kept going, knowing there were a great many natural settings I could shoot against; I walked to the top of the hill at Round Hill Pines beach, where I figured I could both get some of the first race leaders coming in to the last big grade of the ride and maximize the length of the wagon train parade by shooting it in a naturally slow spot going around the curve just below the top of the hill.  To my great shock I found that some of the bike riders (like the ones pictured above) had already beaten me even then.  I filmed extensively along that hill and then packed up and kept heading east as the bicycles kept whizzing by in small packs too widely separated to be all that compelling on film.

See my Gallery of scenic shots from Marla Bay and Zephyr Cove on Google+
As I came to the sound wall at Marla Bay, I decided that the best thing I could do was kill a little time off road until the race got a little thicker, so I detoured down through the wealthy lakeshore enclave to "steal" a few views of their marvelous private beach, and got myself pleasantly lost in the backstreets for a while until I found a place where I could hop the sound wall and get back on the road to Zephyr Cove Resort.

By the time I walked the additional couple of miles to Zephyr Cove, enough time had passed for the scarcity of thick packs of bicycles to no longer be a problem and I was pleased to find that not only was there a beautiful stand-up shot in front of the M.S. Dixie II (which would let me plug the Sternwheeler Races on camera) but also a good opportunity to catch some of the first large groups of bicycles to be passing that spot so early in the race.

By this point my batteries were dying and I was too tired to make it home, so I caught a ride back home to recharge, snapping a few creative shots of the bikes going by out the car window on the way home, where I had lunch and rested until my batteries were charged enough for me to have some chance of capturing the remainder of the race in something like full form.

By the time my batteries were charged and I was ready to go on to shoot my stand-up at Lakeside Inn, the traffic conditions had gotten much worse.  Since the Horizon, where AMBBR had been held every year since I started covering it, had closed for remodeling this year, the finish line had to be across the street at the Montbleu Resort; forcing the entire bicycle race to turn left across two lanes of traffic on US 50 at Lake Parkway.  This caused an enormous (and apparently unforseen) traffic jam from the finish line that backed up well past Lakeside Inn to Khale Dr. and beyond.

Click here for the America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride 2014 gallery if your browser does not support embedded Google+ posts.

Luckily, I was on foot, so I got to the Montbleu much faster than anyone in a motor vehicle possibly could have, even accounting for the fact that I stopped every few hundered yards to film the now thick crowds of bicyclists coming in towards the finish line.

At the finish line, a celebratory mood permeated the air.  Since America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride is not officially a race, and I had long since missed the very first people to cross the line, I got a great reaction from practically everyone I asked to grant a finish line interview.

Wagon Train Parade 2014

The 65th annual Highway 50 Wagon Train
The first Sunday in June is one of my favorite annual filmmaking adventures because I get to shoot America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride and the Wagon Train parade on the same day.  This year I wanted to get the wagon train in a more rural setting, so instead of walking west to get it passing through South Lake Tahoe (like I did in my 2010 video) , I went East to get it going over the hill into round hill.  To sign up for next year's Wagon Train visit the Highway 50 Wagon Train Association website.

Wagon Master Matthew Shug and wife

I was pleased to see that a lot of the people in the parade recognized me personally after the video I made last year interviewing them all at the 2013 Wagon Train Rondezvous.  Since Wagon Train is a pretty tight-knit organization I saw many of the same people I interviewed last year including Davy "Doc" Weiser and wagonmaster Mathew Shug.

Bonsai Beach Reunion: following up on last year's graffiti cleanup

I went out to Bonsai Beach on May 18th, 2014 to finish the graffiti restoration and beach cleanup job we started at our Bonsai Rock Graffiti Cleanup last November and check up on the progress of the site over the winter.    So Much of the time here in Lake Tahoe when I cover things here on my channel about the environment, you guys never find out how it was resolved or whether it was even resolved at all.  Also,  I'm going to be catching up with some of the people from the original Bonsai Beach graffiti restoration.

Dylan Eichenberg, event organizer:

Hey you guys, I'm +Dylan Eichenberg  and I helped coordinate the first graffiti cleanup last November and since then it's been a lot of progress.  The +Tahoe Regional Planning Agency  actually recognized me with a Lake Spirit Award  and, I mean, I think it recognized everyone who was part of this for helping keep Lake Tahoe clean and beautiful, improving the quality of what we already have.
Also, my good friend Sam Rossi and I, we wrote a grant for Boreal's #ProtectYourPlayground grant program, thanks to Sam who discovered it, and we actually wound up recieving over $1000 that we're going to put towards graffiti supplies to clean up the rest of this beach.  We're out here today scoping out how things look and it looks a whole lot better than it did last time out here in November and we think that over the winter the graffiti deteriorated a lot more.  So we're working on catching where the new graffiti is if there's any or what spots we still need to hit up.

See the full Bonsai Beach cleanup gallery on Google+

We're going to be back here in October.  I want to get a huge group of people. I know we're going to have media attention and we're going to have a lot of organizations involved in this process.  So, by October, I hope to see everybody out here.  You know, our goal is to leave this beach immaculate.  There have been over 50 graffiti tags but our goal is to annihilate all of it, and with this grant that really made that possible for us.  We're going to be able to buy more graffiti cleanup supplies than I ever thought possible.  So, I want to send a thank-you to Boreal ski resort  who sponsored us for this.  It's been a real good ride, there's a lot of people involved and I'm hoping to keep on growing that effort.

Cody Liberman of People-of-Tahoe:

My name is Cody Liberman and I'm with People of Tahoe, and we're here at Bonsai Beach doing a little catch-up on what we've done in the last 6 months.  Man, it's great to come out here and see all the familiar faces and see all of the hard work that we've done.  Things are just working out great, you know.  A lot of stuff that was here beforehand is now gone.  The trash is just down to its minimum.  Spirits are so high and the morale is just, you know, everyone is happy to see that we've been doing something productive and it's coming along.

Much of last year's worst graffiti has been entirely eliminated.
Like I said before, it's been, probably, about six months since we've been here and we've been reaching out everywhere else we can and trying to help the lake out any way we can with the pipelines and the environmental studies.  Anything we can.  You know, we're a local clothing company and we've been trying to reach out and be as local as we can.  Anybody who has any suggestions or knows anywhere that needs help -- we're there, any time at any point if you just let us know.  Man, it's great to be back and thanks to everyone who did come out.

Martin Gollery, Photographer:

High Morale: Dylan Eichenberg plays ukulele while Martin Gollery sings along.
Hi, I'm +Martin Gollery,  and I was one of the original people to work here at Bonsai Rock.  In the meantime, I have published a number of photos in Tahoe Quarterly about the fall cleanup.  And so we're out here today cleaning up some more and we will be out here in October as well.

[Jack Durst] So, tell me how much it's different...

[Martin] It's considerably different.  There's a number of tags that we weren't able to get to because of lack of people and supplies So we did a lot in the fall and we did a lot more but there's still a lot to be done.

More things you can do to help protect the #LakeTahoe Environment

Click here for the Bonsai Rock scenic gallery if your browser does not support embedded Google+ posts.

Let me just say that there's been huge progress in making and maintaining our environmental gains here in Lake Tahoe, and I want to let all you guys know that keeping Tahoe blue is something that all of you can do.  Come out, later this fall we'll be having a much bigger Bonsai Beach cleanup and getting Bonsai Beach totally pristine.

You can go to the 5th of July cleanup in Marla Bay and help clean up the fireworks debris after 4th of July.  It's a real easy one-day project.  If you're a Tahoe local you can become a Pipe Keeper: pick a pipe and monitor the effluent coming out of it.  All of these things are available so you can you can do your part to help keep Tahoe blue.  Or, if you're not a local and you just want to give to the cause you can visit and give to the League to Save Lake Tahoe and we'll see so much more environmental progress here in Lake Tahoe.
